These cute little cabbage lookalikes are packed with flavors and excellent source of nutrients. There are many ways to cook them; steam, boil, pan fry, pan roast, grill, etc… The simplest way to get a quick meal out of this is to just toss the brussels sprouts with some salt, pepper and olive oil ( or sesame oil ), then pan roast them. But I kicked it up a notch with this recipe. Sweet and spicy roasted brussels sprouts is one of my favorite recipes. I have made this dish on gatherings and all my friends and family love it. I love it too because it’s easy to make. It takes only a few ingredients, less prep, and not a lot of mess in the kitchen. It can be served as a main dish or a side dish for bbq or steak.
Prepping is easy – just remove any dust and dirt by washing them in cold water. Then trim the bottom off and cut them in half. Also peel off any dark yellow or brown color of the outer leaves. After that, let them dry before placing them onto the sheet pan. I like to wash them before cutting and another quick wash afterwards. No need to add oil before placing the brussels sprouts to the pan because we will add bacon later (YES! Bacon).
When the brussels sprouts get roasted, it will be crunchy from the outside and soft on the inside. To add a crispy texture, I add small slices of bacon. As mentioned above, you do not need to add oil because you will get it off the fat from the bacon.
The roasting process brings out the deep nutty flavor of the brussels sprouts. With the combination of the sauce, it will make this dish full of flavors. To make the sauce: pour honey (sweet), Sriracha sauce (spicy), and oyster sauce (a little bit of salty and earthy) in equal amounts in a bowl and mix them together. Then pour the mixture onto the sheet pan and mix them well. Make sure that the sauce coat all the veggies and bacon. The sauce mixture is not a fixed measurement. If you prefer it to be more spicy, add more Sriracha or the other way around. This sauce is not only for brussels sprouts. It can also be used as a glaze on chicken breast, chicken thighs, and many other veggies.
Preheat the oven to 400°F. Roast them in the oven for about 30-45 mins. Stirring occasionally for even browning. If you prefer it more crispy, leave them in the oven a little longer. When it looks crisp and brown, place it on a serving bowl. Serve it right away and enjoy 🙂
